Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: How to Get Your Deposit Back

September 8, 2026 Legacy Professional Cleaning

Moving out is stressful enough without losing part of your security deposit over cleaning. Most deductions come from the same handful of spots, and almost all of them can be avoided with a thorough, empty-home deep clean.

Start with the kitchen. Clean inside the oven, refrigerator, freezer and microwave, since these are the first places a landlord opens. Wipe out every cabinet and drawer, degrease the range hood and backsplash, and scrub the sink and faucet until they shine.

Bathrooms come next. Scrub the tub, shower walls and grout, descale glass doors and fixtures, and clean around and behind the toilet. Wipe out vanity drawers and the medicine cabinet, and polish mirrors streak-free.

Then go room by room. Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures, wipe baseboards, doors, door frames and light switches, clean window sills and tracks, and remove any nail-hole residue or scuffs you're allowed to touch up. Finish by vacuuming closets and mopping every floor on your way out.

Take photos when you're done. Date-stamped photos of each room are your best protection if there's ever a question about the condition you left the home in.
